Automation and Surveillance are new areas where the personal computer is being put to work for the consumer. Sensors, Relays, and Cameras can be controlled remotely. Data and Video can be stored and burned to CD/DVD. Historical data can be transformed into digital graphs. The possibilities are really endless. Previously we relied on inadequate (and costly) alarm systems that would inform us of an intrusion, but without any evidence to provide authorities. Video recorders would capture poor quality time delayed snapshots, requiring one to review hours and hours of uneventful footage. Now we can capture video only when there's an event detected and need to record it.
