Linux System Administrator

ScratchSpace Inc. is an IT managed Services Provider specializing in Linux and Open Source Software solutions. We are searching for a new member to join our technical services team in Santa Cruz. Our services include the following :

  • Remote/Telephone support for Linux based systems, typically in the cloud
  • Design, implement, deploy, host, manage Linux based platforms and/or solutions including private clouds
  • Provide contract maintenance, monitoring, and security for existing systems
  • Assess, recommend, cleanup, document IT infrastructure for companies
  • Provide IT process oversight and recommendations to improve customer efficiency
  • Amend existing IT teams to provide advanced consulting services

We build solutions based on open source that typically outperform commercial offerings and generally with a lower total cost of ownership. We have a big picture viewpoint which enables us to architect solutions that best fit the business’s long term goals, minimize or eliminate future pitfalls and scalability issues. Some of the solutions and technologies we work with are :

  • Private cloud platforms using Xen and VMWare virtualization
  • Load balancing using HAProxy and Pound
  • Small to Enterprise level telephone systems using Asterisk
  • High performance hosting using Nginx, PHP-FPM, MySQL, Varnish, etc.
  • Network file systems using DRBD, NFS, GFS2, GlusterFS
  • High availability failover using Pacemaker and Corosync
  • Implementing software applications on top of any combination of the above

In addition to the above we implement and maintain the infrastructure that supports these systems such as IP assignment, firewall, DNS, email servers, etc. All work is performed form our office in downtown Santa Cruz. We’ve been fortunate enough to have built a very special team here in Santa Cruz , and it’s going to require someone equally as special to fill this position.

You’re familiar with PC server hardware and have experience selecting optimal configurations based on the task the server will perform. You’ve worked with many of the above technologies.

Here are some of the job duties you might fill in this position :

  • Daily management of our trouble ticketing and call queues
  • Delegation of tasks based on team member experience
  • Mentoring of team members to increase their capabilities
  • Quality control and testing of customer deployments
  • Escalation point for critical customer issues
  • Maintain company servers and software applications
  • Write and review documentation
  • Act as an individual contributor handling trouble tickets
  • Architect solutions based on customer needs
  • Work with customer to define project requirements
  • Develop proposals including hardware and labor costs
  • On Call rotation to respond to emergency pages
  • Write various scripts for system management

Desired technical experience and soft skills :

  • 3 years experience with Linux System Administration (RedHat preferred)
  • Asterisk VoIP stack
  • LAMP stack
  • DNS and Mail administration
  • Server Virtualization (VMWare, Xen, KVM)
  • Cloud Services (AWS, RackSpace)
  • Shell scripting in at least one language (Perl, Python, PHP)
  • Configuration Management Software (Puppet, Chef, Ansible)
  • Server monitoring systems (Nagios, GWOS)
  • Network analysis (Wireshark, tcpdump)
  • Helpdesk software
  • Great communication and writing skills
  • Ability to mentor and provide leadership

This is onsite position in Santa Cruz, CA with normal business hours of 9am – 6pm Monday through Friday. There may be an occasional need for after hours or weekend maintenance work. ScratchSpace Inc. provides 2 weeks paid time off, and a shared expense medical benefits plan. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
